Giovanni - Pokemon Generations (2016)

The father of Silver and the leader of the criminal organisation Team Rocket, Giovanni was a criminal mastermind and Pokemon trainer, who used the Viridian Gym as a front for him to capture and abuse Pokemon.

However he was defeated in battle and made a retreat before Looker and members of the International Police could arrest him for his crimes. He had been monitored by officials and was reported to have been using the Celedon City Game Corner as a source of income, while attacking the Silph Company in Saffron City for the Master Ball they were developing. However by the time they tracked him down and stormed the gym, he was gone. Due to his charisma and leadership skills, Team Rocket remained loyal to their leader, however were unaware of where he was or what he had been planning to do after.

Having been tipped off that the police would be on to him - who had found out from unknown sources that he was the Viridian City Gym Leader - Giovanni decided he would make his escape.

Just as he was leaving Viridian City, Silver confronted Giovanni over why he was leaving, calling out his actions as being cowardly. He calmly replied to his son that the strength to move on is something you gain when you admit defeat and learn to overcome it. Stating that he was going to build a "stronger organisation" he concluded that he needed to distance himself from everybody - including his family. He went on to defend his decision, adding the power of all organisations is gathering the right kind of people that can work well together in unison. However Giovanni angrily reprimands himself for his failure to utilise Team Rocket to the best of his abilities. Vowing to revive Team Rocket to rule the criminal underworld he prepared to leave.

Seeing Silver get emotional, Giovanni told him that he will understand his actions when he grows up. But Silver replies that he wanted to be nothing like his father, snapping that he was weak and needed people to prop him up because he could not beat anyone on his own. Watching his son run off, Giovanni stood silently for a moment, contemplating his decision and the way in which he had parted with his family.

Standing on the hills overlooking the city, he declared that despite the set backs he had faced in Kanto, Team Rocket would never fall, expressing the organisation's belief that all Pokemon are there solely for profit and disposal of Team Rocket. Putting his hat on, he turned his back on his son and his city and walked off.


"The Legacy"

Three years after his defeat at the hands of Red and Blue, Giovanni was still biding his time and plotting the return of Team Rocket. Despite this however, loyalist members of the fractured Team Rocket Johto branch attempted to contact him with a live public broadcast at the Goldenrod Radio studio, calling for him to return and lead them back to glory. He did not show up at the siege of the station and the operation ended with failure.
