Maester Caleotte - A Feast For Crows (2005)

A maester in the service of Prince Doran Martell and his court at the Martell families' retreat of the Water Gardens, Caleotte tended to the Prince's gout, as well as the other duties designated to members of the Orders of Maesters; tutor, healer and councillor. He had been in the service of the Martell Family for many years, serving Doran's mother when she was the Princess and Lady of the Sunspear.

As a child, he was fortunate enough never to contract the disease redspots, which could be lethal to those who catch it when they were adults and only occurred once.

To aid his Lord in his mobility, Caleotte designed and built a wheelchair for Doran, that could be moved by the Prince himself or by the Captain of his guard Areo Hotah.

He was considered to be extremely clever and wise with his council by the members of his court, however "meek".

"The Captain of the Guard"

Receiving a raven from King's Landing addressed to Prince Doran, Caleotte felt unnerved by sight of the scroll, entrusting Hotah to personally hand it to the Lord of Sunspear in his place.

Caleotte tried desperately to catch up with Obara Sand, trying desperately to calm her down and explain that Prince Doran had already heard about Oberyn's death at the hands of the Mountain, however the enraged Sand Snake moved too quickly for him to do so.

He remained after the confrontation between Obara and her uncle, attending to Doran and asking if he needed to take a draft to ease the pain of his gout, however the Prince dismissed the suggestion with the fact that he would need to keep his faculties. Wondering if it was safe to allow her to return to the Sunspear alone - where she could attempt to inspire the people of Dorne to avenge their beloved Prince Oberyn - Doran said that he would go there too.

Noting his Prince's instructions to send a messenger ahead of him to prepare his apartments in the Tower of the Sun, he again wondered if what he was doing would be a dangerous move, but Doran once again shrugged of his concerns as a need for necessity. He warned the Prince that he was under constant scrutiny from Ser Arys Oakheart of the Kingsguard, who was in constant contact with Cersei Lannister and the Small Council. Bowing as he received his final instructions, Caleotte went to carry out his orders and organise a litter to transport Doran back to his ancestral home.

Caleotte set out with Doran and his party on a donkey, riding behind the litter as the procession made their way to Sunspear.

After Tyene Sand was dismissed from the throne room, the Maester rushed to see whether Doran's niece had scratched him during her heated discussion, relieved that she had not done so. On his command, he rushed to get the Prince a "thimble full" of Milk of the Poppy to numb the pain.

"The Queenmaker"

Believing that Princess Myrcella had been infected with redspots - not realising it was a lie to get her out of Sunspear - Caleotte gave Ser Arys a special ointment that would help stop the infection from growing worse, adding that they would just need to give her time to rest and recover.

"Princess in the Tower"

Following Areo Hotah's return to Sunspear with the wounded Myrcella, Maester Caleotte took the young Lannister into his care. Although he managed to save her life, he was unable to completely heal the deep gash and missing right ear that she had sustained from Ser Gerold Dayne, no matter how many "poultice or potions" she was treated with.

He informed Prince Doran that his ward was going to live, who was both relieved and furious that his plans for revenge against the Lannisters had almost been destroyed by his daughter Arianne's impatience.
