Lord Jon Arryn - Complete Guide to Westeros (2011)

The Lord of House Arryn, Jon Arryn resided in the Eyrie, the ancestral seat of his family, the Wardens of the East and rulers of the Vale of Arryn. He was the Lord Paramount of the Vale, a title which had been passed to him by his father.

He fostered both Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon when they were children, remaining loyal to them both as they grew older. When King Aerys II demanded both of their heads for supposed treason - having just overseen the murders of Lords Rickard and Brandon Stark - Jon refused the decree and instead called for the Knights of the Vale to challenge the rule of the "Mad King."

To forge an allaince with House Tully, Jon and Eddard married Lord Hoster Tully's two daughters Lysa and Catlyn, helping Robert to take the Iron Throne.

With his new wife, he bore a young heir of House Arryn, Robyn. Both Robyn and Lysa moved with him to King's Landing.

For his loyalty and council, he was made the Hand of the King. In his first act as the adviser, he negotiated a peaceful truce between the crown and Dorne, condemning the actions taken against Princess Elia Martell (by Ser Gregor Clegane) during the Sack of King's Landing and her brutal murder.

Jon continued to operate as the Hand for the remainder of his life, until he died from mysterious circumstances.
