A product of Poison Ivy's increased control over plant life (due to
her being infected by three dosages of the Titan strain), the pods
grew all over the surface of Arkham Island, as well as in its network
of tunnels underground.
'Batman: Arkham Asylum'
They had mutated to the point that they could detect movement from
people and produce powerful spores that could severely hurt human
life, in some cases killing them if they had enough direct exposure.
These spores had been used by Poison Ivy the year before in a failed
attack on Gotham City.
These plants had a direct link to Ivy and were powered and sustained
by her. Over the course of the evening she was weakened and endured
by Batman's assaults on the plant, only further strengthening her
hatred for him.
Over the course of the night and morning of Joker's prison riot,
Batman managed to destroy the pods and prevent from them from
impeding the recovery of the Asylum once the Joker and the other
prisoners were contained.
