House Tarly - The World of Ice and Fire (2014)

House Tarly was a house formed in the Reach with strong loyalty for their vassal, House Tyrell. The Lords of the Tarly family reside in the seat of Horn Hill, as well as being the keepers of a Valyrian greatsword known as Heartsbane.

Picking a red huntsman on a backdrop of green for their sigil, House Tarly's family words were "First in Battle"

The first recorded member of House Tarly was "Savage" Sam Tarley, who took part in the Vulture Hunt along with other of the Marching Lords in an attempt to capture and kill the leader of the rebellion, the Vulture King, who opposed the rule of King Aenys I Targaryen.

The Tarly family also took up arms during the Dance of Dragons, fighting for Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. In the battle Honeywine, House Tarly joined forces with Houses Rowan and Costayne in an effort to defeat House Hightower. However they were defeated by the arrival of Prince Daeron Targaryen, who took Lord Alan Tarly as a prisoner.

"Aenys I"

Maester Yandel decided he would document the History of Westeros, calling it "The World of Ice and Fire: A Complete Guide of Westeros," writing it during the reign of King Robert Baratheon, he completing it during the era of King Tommen Baratheon the First of his Name.

Whilst he recounted the tale of the Vulture King, the Maester told the tale of how "Savage" Sam had used Heartsbane to slay his numerous enemies.

"Aegon II"

He then noted how the Tarlys aligned themselves with Princess Rhaenyra and her Blacks, working with fellow houses in an effort to takeout House Hightower, but they were soundly defeated by Prince Daeron the Daring.

Focusing on the Dance of Dragons more, he did not reveal the name of the Tarly Lord who led the troupes, leaving it to independent sources to discover it was Lord Alan.

"House Tyrell"

Writing about the history of House Tyrell, Yandel drew pictures of the various sigils of houses famous for living in the reach - both current and extinct. Among them was House Tarly, who were depicted between Houses Rowan and Ashford. Alongside them were Houses Caswell, Florent, Fossoway, Gardner, Hightower, Merryweather, Mullendore, Oakheart, and Redwyne.
