A bannerman to House Lannister with fealty to House Targaryen, Ser Illyn Payne was the captain of Lord Tywin Lannister's personal guard, while Tywin was Hand to King Aerys II Targaryen.After being supposedly overheard to say that it was the Hand who ruled the Seven Kingdoms instead of the King himself by one of Aerys II's informers, Aerys II had Ser Illyn arrested by the King's Guard, who removed his entire tongue wrenched out of his mouth with "red hot pincers".
"The Mad King" kept Ser Illyn alive however, and he continued to serve faithfully to his Hand and the King along with the rest of his House, and the other Lords of the Westerlands.
